Colorado Springs is the seat of El Paso County and the second largest city in the state. Ranked the fastest growing county in the state during the 1990s, El Paso County is home to a diverse population. The urban appeal of Colorado Springs attracts many professional and young families to the city and its neighborhoods. For a more peaceful lifestyle, head out of the city and into the county’s other communities. Rolling grasslands make up Eastern El Paso, and agriculture is a major part of the economy in this area. Ranchers depend on their livestock and the land to ensure their survival. Western El Paso County borders the front range of the Rocky Mountains revealing small, close-knit communities that have become part of the rugged landscape.
With wide open spaces and a mild climate, Eastern El Paso encourages many residents and visitors to get out and experience the area’s natural beauty by offering various recreational activities year round. Many people are inspired to visit such natural landmarks as the Gardens of the Gods and Pikes Peak. Katherine Lee Bates, a school teacher visiting Pikes Peak, was inspired to write the poem, “America the Beautiful.” Several golf courses in the area provide players at every skill level with a challenging round of golf. Whether it is an easy stroll or rugged ascent, hundreds of trails weave in and out of the magnificent natural landscape so every runner, hiker and biker can choose the right path.
Many activities and events draw thousands of people to Eastern El Paso every year. The U.S. Air Force Academy, located north of Colorado Springs, "trains today’s cadets to become tomorrow’s Air Force officers." The Pikes Peak Cog Railway travels by Minnehaha Falls and big-horn sheep areas to the summit of Pikes Peak. The ProRodeo Hall of Fame, Western Museum of Mining & Industry, Rocky Mountain Motorcycle Museum, McAllister House Museum and World Figure Skating Museum and Hall of Fame are also popular attractions in El Paso County.
